Are the Dallas Cowboys Targeting Jeff Fisher to Be…

The Dallas Cowboys hold a one game lead in the NFC East but that could all fall by the wayside if the New York Giants beat them on Dec. 11. Despite the team’s winning record and current division lead, fans of the team find plenty to complain about. The biggest target right now is Jason Garrett and his play calling.

Now, on Dec. 5, some interesting information has popped up surrounding the fact that two teams have contacted Jeff Fisher with interest in bringing him aboard as their new head coach. While Garrett’s name has never appeared on any hot seat list, Dallas is one of the team’s mentioned when talking about Fisher’s eventual destination.

When trying to determine which two teams might have reached out to Fisher, Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network mentioned the following teams: the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Rams. He mentioned that Fisher has strong ties with the Cowboys and Giants, while San Diego is a home town team and he has ties in the Rams’ front office.

Garrett has been a Dallas assistant since 2007 and moved into the interim head coach position in 2010. Since taking over as head coach, Garrett has built up a 12-8 record with the Cowboys. So far, he has the Cowboys at a 7-5 record in 2011 as they fight for the NFC East crown and a playoff spot.

Jeff Fisher’s only head coaching stop was with the Tennessee Titans. He took over as head coach in 1994 when they were still in Houston and he coached there for 17 seasons. Over his career in Tennessee, he took the Titans to the playoffs in six of those seasons. While Fisher is seen as one of the more successful coaches in recent years, he only finished with double-digit wins in six seasons and failed to even post a winning record in the other 11.

I don’t think trading up for Fisher would be a great move. He has been successful and coached his team to a Super Bowl appearance but has not been as successful as you would like. Garrett, on the other hand, finished 2010 with a winning record (5-3) and needs two more wins in 2011 to finish the year with a winning record. That makes Garrett more successful right now in my eyes.

Compare the two. Jeff Fisher took over midway through the 1994 season and finished with a 1-5 record. He then finished his first full season with a 7-9 record. Even if he doesn’t win another game this season, Garrett has been a more successful coach than Fisher was at the start of his career. I feel pretty good about sticking with Garrett and don’t consider Fisher an upgrade at this time.

Laurent Robinson and His Career Revival in Dallas:…

Laurent Robinson(notes) seems to have come from nowhere to capture the hearts of Dallas Cowboys fans. When the season began, Miles Austin(notes) and Dez Bryant(notes) were the names on the tips of everyone’s tongues. However, thanks to a hamstring injury, Austin has moved to the back burner and a free agent replacement has stepped in to take over the lead receiver role.

No one has to be happier with this than Laurent Robinson, whose career went from aspiring superstar to a free agent looking for an opportunity before his 26th birthday.

The Atlanta Falcons drafted Robinson in 2007 and he entered the NFL as a huge sleeper, a 6-1, 193 pound speed receiver with a 4.41, 40-time. He lost out to Roddy White(notes) in the competition for a spot in the Falcons’ receiving corps, which also included Joe Horn and Michael Jenkins(notes).

After impressing the Falcons in his rookie season with 37 receptions for 437 yards and one touchdown over 15 games from off the bench, he earned a spot on the first team in 2008. Unfortunately, Robinson injured his tailbone and surrounding muscles in preseason and lost the starting job to Michael Jenkins. He injured his knee early in the regular season and remained inactive almost the entire year. He finished the year with five receptions for 52 yards.

Following 2008, the Falcons traded Robinson to the St. Louis Rams, a talented receiver now seen as injury prone. With Torry Holt(notes) and Isaac Bruce(notes) leaving, the time was right for Robinson to finally earn the starting job that evaded him through his time in Atlanta. Robinson had a big preseason and earned a major role in the Rams’ offense heading into the season.

Injury struck again as Robinson, who led the Rams in receiving with 13 receptions for 167 yards and a touchdown over the first two games, suffered a high right ankle sprain and a fractured fibula in Week 3 of the season. The Rams placed him on the IR. With the great play before his injury in 2009, and with new rookie quarterback Sam Bradford(notes) at the helm in 2010, it looked like Robinson might be ready to finally break out.

When Donnie Avery(notes) went down with a season ending injury in the preseason, Robinson got his starting job. He finished his first full season since his rookie year but was banged up and injured much of the season. He ended up with 34 receptions for 344 yards and two touchdowns over the season.

St. Louis chose not to resign Robinson, and after trying to catch on with the San Diego Chargers, ended up signing with the Dallas Cowboys in September. Since signing with Dallas and playing in place of the injured Austin, Robinson has the most yards and touchdowns of his career, with 441 yards and four scores.

Robinson is finally showing the promise that made him so promising since his rookie year. At 26 years old, the best is yet to come and the Dallas Cowboys might have given Robinson the career revival he was looking for.

The Dallas Cowboys remain the nation’s most…

The Dallas Cowboys remain the nation’s most beloved teamFor the fifth year in a row, you love the Dallas Cowboys more than you love anyone else. Even Curtis Painter’s Aunt Judith (pictured, right) loves the Cowboys.

According to a Harris Poll that asked people to name their favorite NFL team, the Dallas Cowboys remain America’s preference. An online survey asked 2,462 adults to name their two favorite teams, and the results show the Cowboys at the top. The Pittsburgh Steelers, the last team before the Cowboys to hold the top spot, are second, followed by the Green Bay Packers. Here’s how the rest of the top 10 shakes out:

1. Dallas Cowboys
2. Pittsburgh Steelers
3. Green Bay Packers
4. New England Patriots
5. Chicago Bears
6. Indianapolis Colts
7. New York Giants
8. Washington Redskins
9. New York Jets
10. Minnesota Vikings

Note that these results come from Sept. 12 through the 19th, before Tony Romo(notes) had a chance to make everyone in Texas wish for his death.

As for the least popular teams, congratulations again, Jacksonville Jaguars. No one likes you. The Jags finished last for the third straight year. Keep in mind that the question only asked participants to name their favorite teams — no one said they hate the Jaguars, it’s just that almost no one named them as their favorite team. In a way, that’s worse than being hated. No one cares.

Here’s the rest of the bottom 10:

23. Houston Texans
24. San Diego Chargers
25. Oakland Raiders
26. St. Louis Rams
27. Seattle Seahawks
28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
29. Buffalo Bills
30. Kansas City Chiefs
31. Cincinnati Bengals
32. Jacksonville Jaguars

In 2002 and 2003, the Raiders were as high as third. This year’s ranking of 25th is the lowest it’s been in at least 12 years.

Also of note is that 55 percent of Americans said they followed the NFL this year. Why is that important? Because last year, that number was 53 percent, which means that the NFL somehow became even more popular through the lockout. Hopefully, the NFL doesn’t take that as a sign that they can do it again, consequence-free.

NFL Cuts: Igor Olshansky Not Returning To Dallas…

Read More: Igor Olshansky (DE – DAL), Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys won’t have DE Igor Olshansky lining up at defensive end in the 2011 season. Per multiple reports, Olshansky has been told that he will not be returning to the Cowboys this year. He signed a five-year, $22.5 million deal in 2009 and now, just two years later, he’s done. From treasure to trash, that’s the NFL.

Olshansky has been a 3-4 defensive end throughout his career playing with the San Diego Chargers before moving onto Dallas. He’ll draw interest from 3-4 teams and depending on the price would be a solid addition to a team.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was just talking this week about the defensive line on the 53-man roster.

And then I like our depth across our defensive line. We’re going to keep seven defensive linemen. That’s one more than you might keep, but gives us a lot of flexibility and we’ll be able to keep them fresh.

I wonder if he was talking about Olshansky. Hop on over to Blogging The Boys to see what else Jones had to say about the Cowboys 53-man roster.
